At today's Arts, Parks, Health, and Aging City Council Committee there was discussion of the proposed acquisition 1735 North La Brea Avenue for use as off-site parking for Runyon Canyon Park.
Mike Shull, the Superintendent of Planning and Construction at Recreation and Parks, indicated that the Bureau of Engineering has done a preliminary feasibility investigation of 1735 North La Brea Avenue. This investigation indicated that:
- Quimby funds are available to help purchase this site; and,
- As a parking lot, the site could accommodate approximately 35 spaces.
He also spoke to some of the possible operational issues a parking lot at this site could face including access (ingress and egress from La Brea Avenue) and monitoring (ensuring that parking was for Runyon Canyon Park visitors only).
Mr. Shull also indicated that another option available to help alleviate the Runyon Canyon parking issues could be the utilization of an existing parking "area" on the grounds of the Wattles Mansion.

CM LaBonge indicated that he would like Recreation and Parks to investigate both options; 1735 North La Brea Avenue and Wattles Mansion. He also suggested that the City could enforce Runyon Canyon only parking at the proposed 1735 North La Brea Avenue parking lot in a manner similar to how the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy operates the parking lot at Fryman/Wilacre Park (using parking stickers/stations and Park Rangers as enforcement).
The item was continued for 30 days.
