Thursday, September 10:
- City Planning Commission (8:30 AM)
- Item 8 – CPC-2009-4918-CE: Yet another hearing on the proposed revisions to the Cultural Heritage Ordinance. The proposed ordinance would update the designation criteria for Historic-Cultural Monuments, change the Cultural Heritage Commission ability to review of halt proposed demolitions, alterations, improvements, and additions to City Historic-Cultural Monuments, change the process by which private property owners are notified of Cultural Heritage Commission actions, and strengthen the City's enforcement provisions. This latest hearing is to discuss changes which were made in response to concerns raised by business community (primarily Downtown property owners) at the July 9 City Planning Commission Meeting. The majority of those concerns were about the City's ability to review and approve modifications made to the interior of City Historic-Cultural Monuments. Effectively, these "concerned" parties want to minimize or eliminate the City's ability to review interior spaces in City Historic-Cultural Monuments. The simple fact is that in many cases the interior of a historic structure is as important, if not more, than its exterior and therefore deserves an equal amount of protection.
- Item 10 – VTT-65583-CN-DB-1A: Appeal of part of the decision of the Advisory Agency denying an increase in height to 36 feet in-lieu of the maximum 30 feet for a 11 unit condo project located at 6527 Leland Way. When this project was originally approved, the City Planning Department denied the developers request to increase the height of this development to 36 feet. They determined that the extra 6 feet over the allowable 30 feet maximum was unnecessary as the developer could simply go excavate 6 feet lower (the project includes subterranean parking) rather than building 6 feet up (and exceeding the height limits). Now the City Planning Department has reversed themselves and are recommending allowing the developer to build this development to a height of 36 feet. How surprising.
